Bedmates Soulmates

Chapter CHAPTER 179

I Want A Divorce

I Want A Divorce

Kira sat in the front passenger seat, relieved and a little annoyed.

If Austyn wanted her to get in the front, he could have just said so.

For a minute back there, he looked like he was ready to spank her.

Austyn tossed his phone over the dashboard and yanked on his tie to loosen it.

'Am I your chauffeur? Do I have warts on my face?'

"What?" Kira looked at him blankly.

'Then why did you sit in the back?'

Kira opened her mouth.

He was the one who put her in the backseat.

The man was being so unreasonable!

But then she thought better of it and kept her mouth shut.

No good could come from talking back to him.

Kira lowered her head and busied herself with the seatbelt.

Austyn's face grew darker.

How dare she ignore him!

He started the engine and stepped on the gas.

The Hummer shot out like a rocket.

Kira bit back a scream and held on to the grab handle.

She turned her face to the window, determined not to give him the satisfaction of seeing her scared reaction.

'Imagine you're riding a roller coaster,' she said to herself, closing her

eyes.

If she couldn't see how fast the buildings outside the windows were retreating from view, she wouldn't know how fast the car was going.

She'd read somewhere that the Hummer had a unibody steel chassis.

Steel meant if the car crashed, it wouldn't crumple like a tin can, right?

Kira willed herself to pretend she was riding the Matterhorn Bobsleds at Disneyland.

Austyn glimpsed her pale face and her clenched hand on the grab handle.

He eased off on the gas pedal.

Kira soaked herself in the tub.

The water had gone cold.

Forty-five minutes ago, Austyn pulled up in front of the villa.

Kira rushed upstairs and made it to the bathroom before she threw up.

She rinsed her mouth, then she took a shower.

It wasn't enough..

I Want A Didrce

So she drew a bath.

The skin on her hands had wrinkled from being soaked in water for too long, but she was in no hurry to get out.

She needed the time to rehearse what she was going to say.

When she felt the temperature in the bathroom drop, she climbed out of the rub and got dressed.

Austyn was sprawled on the sofa in the bedroom when she came out.

The lights were off.

The only sources of illumination were the pale moonlight through the French window and the glowing cigarette tip between his fingers. The room smelled like nicotine and menthol.

Kira sucked in a deep breath.

She approached the sofa.

Austyn's eyes were open.

He didn't look at her.

After going back and forth between three different speeches, Kira opted for the direct approach.

'I want a divorce.'

Austyn moved.

He sat up on the sofa slowly, eyes fastened on her face.

The cigarette fell onto the carpet, burning a hole.

He didn't notice.

'What did you say?"

Kira steeled herself.

She couldn't back out now.

"Austyn McCarthy. She tried to match his cold, emotionless tone with hers. 'I want a divorce.'

Her voice rang out loud and clear in the spacious bedroom.

Austyn got up from the sofa.

They were just three steps apart.

He covered the short distance in one stride, crushing the cigarette under his heel.

He wasn't wearing his shirt.

Kira's eyes were level with his muscled chest.

His belt was unbuckled, hanging loosely over his pants.

Kira lowered her gaze and stepped back.

He advanced.

'Say that again."

His voice was almost directly over her head, low and hoarse.

Kira swallowed hard.

The room was so quiet, she could hear her own heartbeat.

She moved back again and kept her eyes on the floor.

She thought she could handle what she knew was going to be a difficult situation, but she'd overestimated herself.

Austyn didn't have to raise his fist or voice to make her feel intimidated.

His presence alone could produce that effect.

Suddenly, he shot out an arm and shoved her.

Kira lost her balance and fell backwards. "Ah!!

But she didn't hit the floor.

Instead, her back connected with something soft.

The mattress.

Before she could breathe out, Austyn was on top of her.

He straddled her legs, his hands beside her shoulders.

His face hovered over hers.

Kira was forced to look up.

She stared into his eyes.

'You want a divorce?!

His voice was incredibly calm.

Kira felt his chest vibrate.

"You c

can't chicken out now!' she shouted at herself in her mind.

She'd spent the past two days, while locked up in the hospital ward, thinking long and hard about this decision. Kira nodded.

Austyn's lips curved into a smile, but his eyes were cold.

'How much do you want?"

"What?"

It wasn't the reaction she'd expected.

She thought he might go berserk or stomp out of the room.

'How much money do you want me to give you?"

Kira heard him clearly this time, but she didn't understand him.

"That's why you want a divorce, right?"

Austyn's eyes glinted in the moonlight.

'You married me for money. It stands to reason that you'll be divorcing me for the same reason. So, go ahead. Tell me a number. Let's see if your appetite has grown over the year.! His words found their target and pierced her heart.

Kira's breath caught.
