Chapter 7
(Angel's POV)
I refused to back down. "No. I'm not leaving, until you do something! He's bleeding everywhere!"
Dr. Nixon sighed and flicked her wrists at the medics standing at the door. "Please, take this young lady outside. She's being hysterical."
The medics approached me, their faces stern and unfriendly. One of them grabbed my arm roughly and said, "Time to go, sweetheart. You're not helping."
I tried to shake him off, but he held tight. "Let me go! I need to be with my brother!"
The other medic sneered at me. "You mean step... right? I'm sorry you don't get to stay. Now, come on."
They dragged me out of the ward, as I screamed, then the door closed behind me.
As they brought me outside, I struggled against them, but they held me firm. "Let me go! I need to know what's happening to him!"
One of the medics rolled his eyes, and they both dumped me on the floor. "You'll find out about your 'brother' when the doctor decides to tell you. Now, calm down and stop making a scene."
I stopped fighting, as they went back inside, realizing it was futile. I took a deep breath and tried to compose myself. But I couldn't help but cry.
As I sat down on the floor there, I heard footsteps coming. I didn't care if I got caught right at this moment. I only cared about Hendrix. I saw Miss Stefan storming towards me, her face red with anger.
"Angel, what did I tell you?" she demanded, her voice low and angry. "I told you to stay in your room, but no, you had to go and disobey me, didn't you?"
I stood up and took a step back, feeling more boldness than fear. "Miss Stefan, I had to see Hendrix. I had to make sure he was okay."
Miss Stefan's expression turned incredulous. "You had to see Hendrix? You had to make sure he was okay? You're not his mother, Angel. You're not even his girlfriend. You're just his stepsister, and you need to start acting like it." I felt a sting from her words, but I tried to defend myself. "I'm just worried about him, Miss Stefan. That's all."
Miss Stefan's anger seemed to intensify. "Worried about him? You're worried about him? You're the one who's always causing trouble, Angel. You're the one who's always disobeying the rules. And now, you're worried about Hendrix?" She took a step closer to me, her eyes blazing. "You need to focus on your own problems, Angel. You need to focus on your own treatment. Because, right now, you're not even taking care of yourself."
I felt a lump form in my throat as I tried to hold back tears. I knew Miss Stefan was right. I had been disobedient, and I had been causing trouble. But I couldn't help it. Not when Hendrix was involved.
I stood my ground, feeling more defiant than ever. "Yes, I'm worried about him. And I have a right to know what's going on. Why are you guys being so secretive, Miss Stefan? Why won't you tell me what's happening to him?" Miss Stefan scoffed and she had that 'if looks could kill' expression on her face. So, the kind face she puts on is a farçade after all. "You think you have a right to know? You think you're entitled to information about Hendrix's treatment?" I scrunched up my brows, wondering where she was going with this. "Of course! Yes, I do. I'm his stepsister, and I care about him. And I don't like the way you're being fishy about this. Something's going on, and I want to know what it is." Miss Stefan's face turned red with anger. "How dare you!" she spat. "You're just a rebellious girl who thinks she knows better than everyone else. Well, let me tell you something, Angel. You don't know better. You don't know anything."
I stood my ground, despite Miss Stefan's intimidation. "I know that something's not right here," I said. "And I'm going to find out what it is."
Miss Stefan's expression turned cold, and she laughed hard. "Fine," she said. "Try to find out if you can. Now get to your room!"
I stood stubbornly, folding my arms and acting like I hadn't heard her.
Miss Stefan's face turned red with anger as she glared at me. "Are you ignoring me? Is it so hard to follow instructions? Huh, Angel? Why are you still here?"
"I'm not leaving until I know what you guys are doing to Hendrix."
Miss Stefan brow shot up. "You're not going to dictate what happens here, Angel. You're a patient, not a doctor."
I wanted to argue that I was not actually a patient but only here because of him but I decided against it.'
"I don't care," I said. "I'm not leaving until I see Hendrix."
Miss Stefan's expression turned cold. "Fine. If you won't leave, then I'll have to call your mother."
My heart skipped a beat at the threat. I knew my mom would be furious if she found out I was disobeying Miss Stefan. She would lecture me for hours, and maybe even take away my privileges. But I wasn't going to back down. This was Hendrix we were talking about here!
"Go ahead," I said, trying to sound braver than I felt. "I'm sure she'd love to hear about how you're treating us like prisoners, and taking away our rights to health care."
Miss Stefan's eyes narrowed, and she smirked. "You think you're clever, don't you? But you're not. Your mother will be very upset when she hears about your behavior. And you'll be the one who has to deal with the consequences." I swallowed hard, trying not to show my fear. I knew my mom would be angry, but I was willing to take that risk to protect Hendrix.
"I'm not leaving," I said, trying to sound firm.
I was trying not to show any weakness. But inside, I was trembling with fear. What would my mom say when she found out? Would she believe Miss Stefan's side of the story?
"You're going to regret this, Angel. Mark my words."
"I'm shaking in my boots," I said, my voice dripping with sarcasm. "My mum's got her own problems to deal with. Besides, I'm not breaking any rules. I'm just trying to help my brother."
"You're not helping him, you're hindering his treatment. And if you don't leave now, I'll make sure you face the consequences."
I crossed my arms, standing my ground. "I told you, I am not going anywhere. And I'm not afraid of you or your consequences."
Miss Stefan's eyes flashed with anger, and for a moment, I thought she might hit me and I stepped back instinctively. But then, she seemed to regain control of herself. "I'll give you one last chance to leave," she said. "If you don't, I'll make sure you regret it."
I smiled sweetly. "I'm not going anywhere."
Miss Stefan's face became more ugly and twisted than it already was. "We'll see about that." And she stormed off, leaving me standing alone in the hallway.
