Escaping from the wolf

Chapter 20

The water was too cold; my bones began to freeze, making my attempts to reach the surface in vain. But using all my strength, I managed to swim out... But not to where I had fallen; I had lost the hole I made when I fell. Oh God, I'm going to

die! My hands beat desperately against the ice. I was desperate.

I tried every way to find an exit but couldn't manage it. My air was running out.

THOMAS.

I immediately ran when I saw Anne falling to the bottom of the water. The others screamed at the sight, and some approached with me, including Carolina, Kenzie, and Kayler. "Anne, oh God!" Carolina exclaimed.

When I reached the spot where she had fallen, I began searching for her, but not seeing any signs of her made me start to worry. Damn it.

She surely can't find the exit. I started waving my hand in the water so she could see where to go. "She's here!"

Carolina's voice made me turn and head toward her quickly. I looked under the ice and saw Anne hitting and trying to get out. Without thinking further, I removed my shirt and quickly wrapped it around my hand. I crouched down and started hitting the ice with my fist. One, two, three blows, and nothing; it was too thick. I didn't give up, kept hitting until I finally saw it starting to crack.

Anne seemed to notice the scene because she stayed still, just waiting. There's no more time; the air will soon run out. I hit the ice with more force until it broke, making a small hole, but now I could remove the rest around it. I did that until the circle was big enough for her to get out. I watched as she moved toward the exit, and seconds later, she pulled her head out, gasping for air.

I grabbed her by the arms immediately and pulled her out. She started coughing.

"It's okay, little one, it's all over," I said to her.

"Anne, are you okay?" her friend approached her.

Anne just nodded to her and cuddled into my body, I suppose because it was warm. I hugged her to warm her up. I could see her mouth and nose were red from the cold, her skin pale, and she had started shivering. "Let's take her to the house," her friend said to me.

I nodded and then held Anne in my arms, like a newlywed, and followed Carolina and her boyfriend. The others just watched. I ignored them all and focused on getting to the house as quickly as possible. Anne kept shivering.

"Calm down, just wait a little," I whispered close to her ear. I don't think she was even conscious. I'm starting to hate lying to her... And that's not good. Not for me.

Minutes later, we crossed the doors of Carolina's house.

"Come, take her to the kitchen; I'll go get dry clothes and a blanket," she said before going upstairs. Her boyfriend followed me. I headed towards where the kitchen was supposed to be.

"I'll make coffee. Maybe you should bring her a bit closer to the fire to start warming up," Kayler didn't seem very friendly, but he was doing what he could. It was clear he wasn't happy to have me here. Of course, his friend is Apolo, right? That's obvious.

"Sure," I responded curtly. I moved a bench to the kitchen where he had started a fire and sat Anne down. She needed to warm up. I adjusted her hands and brought them closer to the fire.

Kayler set the water to heat and then leaned against the wall with his arms crossed.

"I see you've been trained well," I joked, but he didn't take it as a joke; instead, he gave me a murderous look.

"Yes, very well," he replied tersely.

I chuckled softly.

"Hey, Kayler, I know you think poorly of me, I know... You're Apolo's friend, Anne's ex, and it's obvious you don't like me, but at least try to hide it."

He tensed and didn't respond, only deigned to snort.

"Look, Thomas, whether I like you or not has nothing to do with Apolo or Anne. You might be able to fool others, but not me. I know very well when someone is hiding something," he began, which made my skin tense, and anger ran through my veins. "I know why you're here, and I also know why you're looking for Anne."

I didn't respond.

How the hell does he know? Did Clark or Elleon talk to him? But that wasn't the issue now. What he knew was true; my purpose has always been the same... But since I met Anne, everything changed. I didn't want this to happen. It just did, and I don't even know when.

"How is she?" Carolina had returned. "Give her to me; I'll take her to my room."

Anne was starting to react, barely moving. Carolina lifted her from the bench and took her outside, leaving us alone.

"I just hope your plans don't fall apart, Thomas," he spat my name, also saying it as if he knew what I was thinking. And then I realized... He might be reading my mind, but that's impossible because I'm also a... I'm also an Alpha, and Alpha minds can't be read. Unless he found out another way.

"What do you know, Brown?" I crossed my arms. He also faced me.

"The same thing you do, White. Just one thing: you know very well that when Anne finds out, she won't forgive you... And that one of you, whether Apolo or you, will have to fight for her love... That was known, but the issue here is not who wins that battle, because the one who will decide is Anne, her heart." He walked to the exit but turned back to me. "You're far from your pack, White. Are you sure they can survive without their Alpha?"

I wasn't, but what I had to fix was more important than the pack. When I return and distance myself from all this, I will take charge of it again.

"I'm not, besides, I won't stay for long."

He chuckled softly and disappeared through the kitchen threshold. I rubbed my face and placed my hands on the counter. My fist was injured, but I didn't care. Nothing is going as planned; everything is unraveling.

I need to do something; I have to choose between Anne and... her. I have to do it. Everything was fine at first; my plan was clear, but when I met her, I realized she was my other half. Nothing has been right since I discovered that Anne was my mate.
