Chapter 106
Katherine's POV
It felt like an eternity that I was away from Xavier, and I was missing him so much.
I couldn't help but wonder if he was okay.
Did his wound heal?
Was he sitting by my side, waiting for me to wake up, or did he just leave me in the hospital, cold and alone?
I knew I must be sleeping. How else would I be here and not there?
I was sure I didn't die from the bullet wound; Kia, my wolf, had burned the lead off as quickly as it entered my body and started the healing process.
She had now taken me to a place where we were training. She wanted me to learn how to properly shift, how to use my powers, and how to manipulate time and space.
Not that it made any sense to me, but she promised me that she would take it slow and teach me.
I just wished she could explain who I needed to find.
Was it John's father?
Does John even know who he is?
Where would I find him?
What does he look like?
And what do I need to do with him?
I sighed.
At least everyone alive who saw me shift that night would keep my secret. Being a white wolf was dangerous, and being a pure white wolf was even worse. Another breath escaped my lips.
Everything Kia told me was a bit much. I had already had my own revenge on my mind, and I was dead set on having John and his family behind bars for my parents' deaths. How can she expect me to change course now and find someone for whom I have no idea who he is?
"You are stronger than you look," Kia argued.
"Thanks," I said bitterly. "But I want a normal life."
"So do I," she said sadly, "but it will never happen until you fulfill what you were created for."
I huffed in annoyance and stopped training. I have been trained from the minute we arrived.
"I don't want to," I said angrily. "I just want to be a normal wolf and live my life in peace!"
I just fired the CFO from the company, gained the trust of the board of directors, and all I need to do now is get John out of the company, and the company will be at peace. I can hand over the shares to Xavier and move on, living a happy life by his side as his Luna. What more does a girl need?
Didn't I have enough pain and agony for a lifetime?
Isn't it time to live a normal life?
"I have been with you every step of the way," Kia said, and her beautiful golden eyes fell on me. She looked so sure about her facts. She looked so proud of me.
"Then why didn't I shift like any other?" I asked, feeling annoyed. Kia was hiding something from me, but what?
"Your parents knew you needed to be marked first," was her simple answer.
But why hide me?
Why not search for my mate?
"It's complicated," Kia replied to my thoughts. "Things didn't go as planned, and there were complications on the way.
There were secrets hidden behind those words.
What could have been so complicated?
Was she referring to Xavier?
I shook the thought off. I wouldn't be able to sense him if he wasn't my fated mate.
"Come on," Kia said, and I followed her home to the small cottage where we stayed.
"How long have we been here?" I asked, feeling tired.
"It's been a couple of days, maybe a month."
"A month?" I gasped, looking at her. "How long are normal human days?"
"Three," she answered, and she waited for my emotions to boil over.
Three human days?
I have been here for three days!
"Take me back," I said, and Kia shook her head.
"We are not done training!"
"I don't care," I growled, "you can't keep me here prisoner!"
Kia sighed and shook her head.
"If you don't, I will refuse any more training," I threatened, "and you could find yourself a new host and do your search!"
"Fine," she gave in, sounding extremely pissed, "but then we will be training at night."
Before I could argue, the familiar and annoying beeping sound of a hospital monitor echoed in my mind.
Xavier's scent hit my nose at the same time.
I have missed him so much!
Xavier's warm hand held mine, and I internally whimpered when he let go of my hand.
I followed the sound of his footsteps, noticing that he hadn't left.
"Alpha?" Greyson's family voice sounded from my right; I guess he must have come and seen if Xavier was okay.
"Ray is sad," Kia said. "I can feel his emotions."
"I would have been sad too if I had to look at my mate's unconscious body for days!" I growled at her. "We are hurting our mate!" "Then open your eyes," Kia said, rolling her eyes at me.
"John fled," Greyson said, and every cell in my body wanted to sprout out of anger to find him.
"Calm down," Kia said, "before you shift in here!"
I took a slow and steady breath, but I couldn't help my thoughts going haywire, and getting more angrier by the second.
Why the f*ck will he suddenly pack up and leave?
Was there something I missed?
Was he part of the kidnapping?
Where did he go?
"Calm down!" Kia growled. "You are missing the conversation!"
"He left them behind," Greyson answered.
Who was left behind? Rose and Erika?
My thoughts raced back to being held captive by Nathan.
When Nathan dragged me outside, Erika's familiar scent of cheap perfume lingered in the air, and for a moment I wondered if she was there.
When I couldn't hear her, I knew she must have visited Nathan. Were they partners? Did she ask and pay him to kidnap me?
Did she pay him to get rid of me?"
"There is more, isn't there?" Xavier asked.
I could sense Greyson sitting next to me, his presence calming me down.
"Greyson has the ability to read people," Kia said, "but that's not his only ability."
I turned my attention to Kia and shifted my head to the side.
"What do you mean?" I asked.
"He can manipulate emotions," she said. "That's why you feel so calm. He is hoping that by keeping you calm, you will heal faster. He can feel your emotions, he knows you are awake and listening." "But I am fully healed!" I argued.
Kia suddenly became quiet, and I searched for her gaze.
"There is something that I didn't tell you," she said, sad.
"Like what?" I asked.
Is that the reason she didn't want to return to my time?
"You, we..." Sadness and guilt crossed Kia's eyes, and whatever she was hiding must be serious.
Her sad emotions started to cloud my mind, and I felt suffocated.
What was so bad that she was scared of telling me?
"You are not going to like this," Greyson said, and my attention snapped back to the conversation between Xavier and Greyson.
"Councilor Williams gave me a copy," Greyson said, and I tried to recall who Councilor Williams was.
Did I know him?
My mind became heavier with Kia's emotions.
"Stop it!" I growled. "Whatever it is, it can wait! I need to know what happened!"
"I will inform Ray that we are awake!" She said, walking back into the depths of my mind.
What did Greyson receive?
"It seems as if Rose had no intention of protecting her mate," Xavier said.
My mind went blank at the news for a moment, and anger burned through my veins again.
"Stop them!" I growled. "Do not let them get away! They must pay for what they have done!"
Greyson got to his feet and walked toward the door, yet he didn't leave.
"Xavier, it is okay to be happy and laugh," Greyson said to Xavier.
"It doesn't feel right while she lays unconscious on that hard bed!" Xavier mumbled, warming my heart.
If there was one thing I knew, it was that Xavier loved me, and I was happy that he was by my side.
"I know," Greyson said, "but I have a feeling that she can still sense us..."
My eyes flew open, and I looked at them both, shifting my head from side to side.
Xavier looked much older and thinner than three days ago.
Did he ever leave my side?
Did he ever eat something?
Was he at my side the whole time?
Xavier's gaze shifted to mine, and he blinked a couple of times before he came to his senses. Then, in two long steps, he stood next to my bed, grabbing hold of my hand and kissing it. "Kate?" He whispered, as tears formed in his deep blue eyes, "Are you really awake?"
