Chapter 3
Katherine's
POV
"You are human, Katherine. You are not fit to rule the pack. If you die, it benefits us all."
My aunt's chilling words rang in my ears, along with her cold and twisted face.
Before I could even say anything, I was pushed off the cliff.
Am I going to die? Killed by my once beloved aunt's own hands.
The wind whistled in my ears as I fell toward the deep, dark, and dangerous waters. My heart aches painfully in my chest because of my family's betrayal. How could she do this to me?
I crashed into the cold, dark waters, feeling my body stiff and sore from my aunt's brutal torture days before.
I fought against the rough waters, overwhelmed by fear and desperation to survive, only to gulp down water, filling up my lungs.
I desperately wanted to get out of that dark abyss.
I gasped for air as I managed to reach the surface, and a scream escaped my lips before more water was forced down my throat.
My body gave in to the cold and rough waters, and my mind became clouded.
Images of my beloved parents moved before my eyes before the waters carried my limp body away.
Another scream left my lips, shaking me awake.
I blinked a few times against the blinding light, seeing thin white curtains moving in the breeze.
I slowly moved my gaze to the side, drinking the room in. That's when reality hit me like a bucket of ice-cold water being poured on top of my head, shaking me wide awake. Startled, I sat upright and moved my bewildered gaze from side to side.
"What is this place? Is this heaven? Did I die?" I managed to squeak in fear.
My mind raced in different directions, but the most brutal reality was that I never expected that my dearest aunt would be the one who had murdered my parents!
I shook my head. I should have known. There was no way that a wolf would just die in a car accident. She must have disguised their deaths as a car accident just to seize control of the King's Group shares! I sighed.
My beloved parents, the alpha and luna of the pack, probably never knew what was coming.
I clenched my fist, thinking of that hypocritical woman I called aunt.
I must seek revenge!
I must avenge my parents' deaths and reclaim control over the pack and the King's Enterprise! It was my father's lifelong effort!
My heart ached thinking of my father and mother; they ruled over the biggest and strongest pack in the North.
I was just a wolfless girl who became the sole heir to the pack and the company.
I sighed, feeling heartbroken.
How would I be able to do this without a wolf? I was never blessed with a wolf when I turned 17, and that was almost four years ago.
Will the pack help and accept me?
The bedroom door screamed on its hinges, interrupting my thoughts, and the door opened, revealing a man so beautifully muscular that my heart stopped for a mere second and my eyes widened. My gaze slowly moved over his perfect features, and my skin warmed when he pinned my gaze.
"Oh Goddess..." I internally moaned when his intoxicating scent of forest and pinewood hit my nostrils. I could feel something awakening inside my body.
"My mate, you finally woke up." His beautiful eyes looked at me affectionately, excitement flickering on his handsome face.
My face started to heat up as soon as he said that.
"I..." I croaked.
"Don't talk yet," he interrupted me gently, and then I saw him turn and walk towards a table in the corner of the room.
"Here." He handed me a glass shyly and stepped away. I noticed his face looked a little flushed and knitted my eyebrows together. "It is water, not poison," he said, chuckling. "Why would I hurt my mate?"
I took a sip of the water, feeling the wetness and coldness cool my throat. I hadn't noticed that I was that thirsty, and I gulped down the rest of the water like a hungry beast.
"Thanks," I said, and he stepped closer and took the glass from me.
My gaze moved over his perfect features. I never expected the first person I saw and met after being pushed off the cliff to be my mate.
"W-w-who are you?" I asked, finding my voice, and another amusing chuckle left his lips.
Did he find me funny? Or was he just nervous?
"I am Xavier Black, from..."
"Black Umbrella Enterprises..." I cut him off, and he nodded his head.
My eyes widened even more, and I swallowed hard against the knot in my throat. I was mated to the rival pack and the company's CEO... "How did I get here?" I asked, finding my voice after I reconciled myself.
"Ray fished you out of the water," he answered.
"Who is Ray?" I asked, and I scrunched my eyebrows. "I would like to thank him."
"He is my wolf," Xavier answered, taking a seat next to the bed.
"Well, would you please thank him for saving me?" I asked, and a smile spread on Xavier's face.
"He says you are welcome."
Xavier hesitated for a second, and I had a sense that something was bothering him.
"What?" I asked, and he lifted his gaze and met mine. His dark blue eyes had almost turned purple, and dark rings followed under his eyes. Was he angry?
"Kathrine..."
"Kate," I cut him off. How does he know my name?
He sighed, then took a deep breath as he got to his feet, dropping his gaze and pacing up and down in my room.
"Kate, you have been in a coma for a couple of days." He stopped walking and talking and looked up. "I want you to tell me what happened."
"I... I..." I sighed. "Even if I told you, you wouldn't believe me."
"Kate, I have seen the marks on your body; the doctor confirmed that you have been tortured." His voice was soft and full of love, yet I could hear and feel the warning behind those words. "Tell me who has done this to you."
I sighed and dropped my head. How could I tell this man that my own family was responsible for these acts against me?
Xavier must have seen my hesitation and pulled his phone out of his pocket, then started to search for something.
When he found what he was looking for, he turned the phone on to show me a news clip.
"Katherine King's death is confirmed, and relatives are in agony!"
I grabbed onto Xavier's wrist and pulled the phone towards me to have a better look, then clicked on the video attached to the news bulletin.
Journalists and the media were scrambling towards a man with dark brown hair; they were like vultures searching for every drop of news there was. I immediately recognized my uncle, and for once, I didn't see him as the kind-hearted person I grew up with. Anger boiled up in me as I spotted my aunt. She was acting like she was crying her heart out.
"These animals!!" I growled under my breath, and Xavier flinched, moving away from me, unsure if I would lose control. "They are the murderers! "I will never let them succeed in having control over my father's pack. I will not let them have the King Group!" Xavier watched me in silence, then a smile twitched at the corners of his lips.
"Do you have proof to state that they have done it?" Xavier asked seriously.
Angry tears burned behind my eyes, and for a second, I wished I could have the proof.
I slowly shook my head as I gave in, and the first tears rolled down my cheeks.
A charming smile followed on Xavier's lips before he uttered the words I never expected anyone would...
