Chapter 89
Katherine's
POV
"No," I answered, "but Erika does. My company has invested at least two million dollars in them."
I sighed.
"The best part is, I don't have any rights to these accounts. John could transfer hundreds of millions or even billions of dollars without my knowledge. Either there is a consortium behind it, or there is something strange happening in these accounts." I knew that it was not uncommon to have accounts manipulated, but it was rare to see such a large amount of money vanish or be moved.
The reason behind this was somewhat intriguing, Xavier.
Although I didn't know the dark side of the business world, I did know when something didn't seem right.
I became even more suspicious, and I knew this matter had something to do with Erika.
"And today you used Erika to gain critical information," Xavier said, pulling me to his lap. "If John suspects that you know something, he can make things very difficult and dangerous for you."
I was sure he didn't see me, but Erika might have told him I lied.
"I know," I said, "but I am ready for whatever he throws my way."
Xavier nodded, yet I knew he would make sure I was saved, or as safe as he could keep me.
Xavier became quiet, and his gaze went blank. I guess he was thinking of linking Greyson with some orders; seconds later, he turned his attention back to me.
"I was wondering what you were planning to do on your birthday," Xavier asked.
"Gosh," she said, surprised, "I have been so busy with all this crap that I didn't think of celebrating it."
My twenty-first birthday was less than a month away, and a sense of sadness was pushing through me.
This will be the first birthday that my parents aren't alive, and it will also be the fourth year of knowing that I was wolfless.
I internally sighed. I have prayed to the Moon Goddess every year on my birthday to have a wolf, but by my nineteenth birthday, I gave up.
"Come on," Xavier said, and I got off his lap. "Let's go and have a walk. Ray is dying to stretch his legs."
"Can I take a rain check?" I said, "I'm a bit tired; it's been one hell of a day."
Xavier nodded and let me be, and he returned to his room.
I didn't know what John was thinking, and for the next couple of days I continued to work like I usually did, but I kept my ear on the ground for any disturbance.
The word money laundering was still bothering me, and I wanted to know more about the subject without creating a stir. I had heard about it on TV, but I never knew exactly what it was about. The only thing I knew about it was that the word meant crime.
My gaze fell on Sarah at her office desk. I knew she was paid to keep an eye on me, but would she have any knowledge of John's illegal transactions? Was she involved in those transactions?
"Sarah," I called from my office, "would you please print and bring me the contracts the financial department sent me yesterday?"
Sarah nodded, and I continued with my work.
I was on the phone with Xavier when Sarah walked in with the contracts in her hand, and I ended the call and turned my attention toward her.
"These are all the project contracts for the past two years," Sarah said, slowly placing them on my desk.
"Thanks."
"Ms. King," Sarah hesitated, "are you going to read all of these?"
"Normally speaking, I would," I answered, "but even if ten people reviewed these contracts together, it would take at least half a month. Maybe you could help me?"
"What are you looking for?" she asked, curious to know.
"Help me sort the companies into these categories," I said, giving her a list. "The other contract you can put aside for now."
There are four or five companies on the list that have had contracts with us over the last couple of years. In fact, I knew there were no problems with those contracts; I was just trying to test Sarah to see how much she knew about John's illegal transactions. Sarah was calmly listening to me, and I continued to explain what I needed and the reason behind it.
"The contracts are really not easy for a newcomer like me. Every part of the contract needs to be clear. I need to ensure that there are no issues with them."
Sarah was startled when she heard this; her hands were slightly shaking.
Was she nervous? Did she know something?
Sarah left my office, took off toward her desk, lowered her head, and pretended to be working on the contracts.
Sure enough, it didn't take Sarah long to start fiddling and looking my way from time to time, and after a while, she made an excuse and went out.
As soon as Sarah left the door, Kelly walked in and handed me some documents I needed to sign.
"Did you perhaps see Sarah on your way in?" I asked.
"Yes, Sarah passed me," she said. "She headed toward John's office."
I shook my head and sneered. I should have known that Sarah was involved.
I signed the documents Kelly gave me, and she left my office.
About an hour later, Sarah returned. She was now more calm, and it made it difficult for me to read her body language.
When Xavier called, Sarah cocked her head to the side, eavesdropping on my conversation while pretending to be busy sorting the documents.
I smiled at that and ended the call.
We worked throughout the afternoon, and before I knew it, it had become dark outside.
"Look at the time," I gasped and lifted my gaze toward Sarah, "where did the time go to? I didn't expect it to be so late. I forgot that you were still here, and now I have made you work overtime. Gosh, I am truly sorry." "It's okay," Sarah said calmly, "working some overtime is common in the rest of the company. I'm used to it."
"It's already so late," I said, "let me make it up to you and take you out to dinner."
"Isn't Mr. Black joining you?" Sarah asked.
"He is working late tonight," I said, and I grabbed my jacket. "He will pick me up at the restaurant when he is done."
At first, I thought Sarah would refuse, but she didn't.
I smiled and grabbed my handbag, and we both took off toward the elevator.
As soon as we exited through the reception door, I noticed a group of unknown men standing and waiting for someone.
Sarah obviously didn't see them, and she kept on walking in front of me while talking about renting a house.
I quietly followed behind her, seeing the group of men suddenly showing interest in us as we passed them.
Although King Group is located in the commercial area, it wasn't as lively at night as in the daytime, and the flickering street lights at night always made people feel a bit more vulnerable and scared.
My gaze landed on the dark construction area about 100 meters away, and I started to panic. There was no way I would cross this road in the dark.
"Ms. King!" Sarah called when she noticed me standing frozen under a streetlight. "Aren't you coming?"
My gaze landed on the streetlight above me, yet I just couldn't get enough courage to cross the road toward the construction area.
The group of men's footsteps suddenly sounded closer, and I turned my gaze over my shoulder to see where they were. The leader of the group flicked his cigarette to the side, and a wicked grin followed on his lips as he accelerated his pace. I stood motionless under the streetlight and closed my eyes.
Was this how it would all end-me getting killed by some street gang?
Where were all those bodyguards Xavier set out to protect me? Have they forgotten about me?
The footsteps came closer and closer, and my heart pounded harder and harder in my chest.
Just as I was sure that they were right behind me, I heard a clicking sound, and everything turned quiet.
Sarah froze out of shock, her eyes widening, and she lifted her hands in the air. Yet I didn't dare turn around and see what was happening behind me.
A snarl, followed by howls, echoed through the silent night.
It was only when Xavier pulled me to his chest and his scent enveloped me that I responded.
Five men were pinned down, crying, cursing, and begging to be let go.
They thought we were easy targets that they could just rob and get away with.
Xavier made arrangements for Sarah to go home and then personally drove me home.
He parked the car and turned to me, and for a second, fear crossed his eyes.
"Kate," Xavier said, looking frightened at me, "you'd better stop investigating this matter. There are many ways to get revenge, but this way might just get you killed."
