Chapter 91
Katherine's
POV
In the last couple of days, I have gone through dozens of such files. And one by one, I pulled them out and made copies of the contents. All of them had the same issue, and John and the CFO were the ones who signed off on the contracts. My popularity among the staff was slowly increasing, which had its benefits when I needed something urgent.
John had officially returned to the company, and it could be felt in the atmosphere around us in the office. Not that it bothered me-I was too busy to really give a sh*t.
"Sarah," I called, "please remind the chief financial officer that I am still waiting for the presentation I asked for earlier. I need it for this morning's board meeting." Sarah nodded, turned on her heels, and rushed toward the elevator.
Our board meetings were always presented by John, but due to his long absence from work, the board voted and decided that I needed to present the company from now on.
So, even though I was drowning in my own work, I was offered a chance to take full control of the company, including every cent that was given out.
I knew John wasn't very pleased about the decision the board made behind his back, but I really did care. He needed to get over all his sh*t and prepare himself to be locked up forever.
I internally sighed. I just had a feeling in the pit of my stomach that he would do everything in his power to have me removed from the position of chairman.
When it was time for the meeting, I gathered all the reports and made my way to the conference room.
I quickly checked if I had everything, but to my dismay, I discovered that the presentation that I asked for from the accounts department had never arrived.
I quickly waved to Sarah, and she rushed to my side.
"Go and find out why the CFO hasn't sent the presentation," I instructed, and Sarah rushed out of the conference room.
Five minutes later, she returned with a gray and worried face.
"Ms. King," Sarah whispered, "the CFO is not available. His PA said that he has some urgent issues to attend to and has left the office."
I internally growled and looked at the people in the room.
They were patiently waiting for the meeting to start.
This chief financial officer had the guts to ignore my request. It wasn't as if he needed to do much; he just needed to present the financial figures in graphs. I have done the rest. He has done this deliberately to delay the meeting and make me look like a fool. My gaze turned toward John, seeing him sitting with a smirk plastered on his lips as he read through the reports given to him without even glancing my way.
I sighed, knowing John must have told the CFO to do this on purpose.
Fine! I internally growled. Two can play this game.
I took a deep breath and smiled.
"Give the directors some coffee," I instructed Sarah."I'll be right back."
I stalked out of the conference room, straight toward the CFO's office.
As soon as I got there, I noticed that the office door was closed and locked.
"Where is Director Duncan?" I asked when his assistant rushed closer. "Where did he go?"
The assistant hesitated for a moment, scared about getting her employer into trouble.
"The director, uh, he went out," she answered, and I turned around, lifting an eyebrow. "There was a problem with something at the bank, and the director needed to leave and go attend to it in person." I just lost it.
Something inside me was slowly reaching its boiling point, and I saw red.
The CFO's assistant gasped and took a quick step back. Her face was whitening in the process.
"Where's the presentation I have asked your Director to create for me?" I hissed under my breath, "Is it ready?"
I unconsciously clenched my fists tightly out of anger, startling the girl even more.
The assistant blinked a couple of times out of shock; she didn't dare look into my eyes.
"Ms. King, I-I-I am s-s-sorry." The girl stuttered nervously. "I don't know; the director didn't give any instructions about a presentation. He suddenly went out."
I gritted my teeth together and sneered. This was planned to the finest detail.
"Okay," I said calmly, taking a deep breath. "Please inform Director Duncan when he comes back to go directly to the HR department. He has been fired."
I turned on my heels and rushed back to my office.
"I should have done the chart myself," I growled as I entered my office. "It was a very simple thing to do."
John and the others may have won the battle, but I sure as hell will win the war.
I quickly took an old presentation, changed the figures on the sheet, and loaded the presentation onto a flash drive. I then headed to the meeting, feeling proud of myself.
It's time to show this board of directors what I can do.
A small smile played at the corners of my lips as I walked into the conference room, seeing John standing in front of me talking. His face fell upon seeing me, and the room quickly quieted down.
"My apologies for starting the meeting late," I said as my gaze moved over the group of people. I made my way to my chair, pulled my laptop closer, and connected the flash drive.
John saw the displeasure on the director's faces, and he turned to me with a mocking smile and said, "Kate, why did you leave the board meeting and make the directors wait so long? It's very rude." "I'm sorry to keep everyone waiting," I said, smiling. "There was a small issue I needed to attend to in the financial office. I have dealt with it."
I was already preparing myself to confront Duncan. I couldn't wait to see his dissatisfied face.
One of the directors stood up with a slightly dissatisfied expression on his face. "What is going on with the finance side that was so urgent that you needed to ignore us for so long?"
I could hear the unspoken meaning behind the director's words, and I looked up and smiled.
"It's nothing serious," I said. "I have already taken care of the issue... I have fired the CFO."
