Chapter His Subtle Confession
The drive to Max's hotel was silent. Neither of them said a word to the other.
Hera wanted nothing more than to ask what was happening but she couldn't. When Max had told her that Bryce might be in some kind of trouble, she had refused to go but after much persuasion from his end, she caved and finally gave in to his demands. She knew deep down that she was a bit upset with him but still, she had badly wanted to ask Max If he was alright. He didn't give her any details and she couldn't guess either, the cause of what was happening. So much for wanting to have a peaceful night free of drama.
Somehow she wondered what she was thinking when she let him get so close to her. She thought that she was changing him for the better. She thought that she was getting through to him but she wasn't. "Are you alright?" Max inquired when she hadn't said anything since they started the journey.
"No." She answered softly.
"Listen, I know that Bryce may seem like a bad person but trust me, he's not. He just has a lot of baggage that he has been fighting alone for a very long time now" He explained with an occasional sigh. "I'm not saying this because I'm his best friend. I'm saying this because I know that he feels something for you. Don't give up him Hera. At least not yet. He truly needs you."
"I've seen the changes myself these past few weeks. Even I am surprised at what you've done to him" He added.
Hera threw him an alarmed look "I haven't done anything."
"Yet." He replied sharply "You may think that you haven't but you have."
"Max?" She called out suddenly.
"Hmmm" He hummed a reply. His eyes still focused on the road.
"What happened to Bryce's parents?" She asked and he darted his eyes at her for a brief second before gazing at the road again.
"What do you mean?"
"He never talks about them and he..." She trailed off with a sudden pause "He always gets this dark glow in his eyes whenever I accidentally mention it to him. It's almost like he never wants to be reminded about them."
Hera saw him blink repeatedly. His hands on the steering wheel tightened a bit and his lips pursed together in something that resembled anger or was it displeasure. She couldn't quite put a finger on it.
"I cannot tell you anything Hera. It's in his place to let you know, that is if he wants you to. I'm sorry." He lets her down easy.
Her face fell sadly. That was definitely not the type of response that she was hoping to get. She had wanted him to go into details. What if Bryce never says a word about it to her? What if he doesn't trust her enough to let her in on what is going on with him? She was his friend wasn't she? And friends are supposed to help each other out.
"Hera" Max tapped her arm slightly, jolting her back from her quick reverie. "We've arrived"
He went further to pull out his seat belt before turning to the other side to let her out.
Hera remembered that Bryce had told her that Max had an hotel but she wasn't expecting to see something like this. The building was bigger and more extravagant than anything she had ever seen. Was it right to call this place an hotel or a palace. "This way. Bryce is in the bar area" He informed her whilst pointing towards the direction.
At first she froze. Her hands shook slightly and her chest constricted again.
She still didn't want to see him yet. She wasn't prepared to face him but then again, not after what she had walked in on earlier today at his office. Was it even worth it? Why is she even doing this? This and many more thoughts flooded her brain but she pushed them to the back of her head where the sun doesn't shine.
If Bryce needs her then she'll definitely be there for him, irrespective of who he was and what he had done. He was her friend and he might actually be in serious trouble.
"Take me to him." She ordered in a firm voice and he led her straight into the building. They arrived at the bar area and it was heavily crowded with people who were drinking and dancing to the music that blasted through the loud stereo system. She even had to shut her ears at some point to prevent herself from going deaf.
When they arrived at his table, she found him chugging down another bottle. His table was a mess and so was he. This wasn't the state that she had expected to see him. Whatever happened to the Bryce that always drank coffee?
"He has refused to stop drinking ever since he arrived here." Max grunted at him with an angry glare.
"I tried all I could to get him to leave
but he wouldn't even listen to me. He's so adamant and stubborn so figured that you're the only person to talk him out of whatever this is He pointed to the littered bottles on the table with an exasperated sigh.
Hera bit her lips nervously. Bryce wasn't even looking at her. He was too preoccupied with whatever he was doing.
Taking a seat next to him, she tapped his shoulders lightly.
"Bryce..." She called out in that soft voice that was uniquely hers.
His eyes widened at that instance and he turned to look at her. His eyes held shock and another look that she couldn't comprehend.
"W-What are you doing here? How come you're here?" His voice was filled with remorse and regret as he spoke.
She reached out for his hands to pull him up. "Let's get you out of here Bryce. Max will drive us home since you're in no shape to do so." He shook his head negatively.
"Listen to her buddy. You've had enough to drink for one night. No more please!" Max chirped in a bid to get him to listen.
"Hera?" He called out softly and rested his head on her bosom. "I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to get you upset."
"I know and I promise to forgive you only if you'll come home with me. I don't like it here." She added. She had never been to a bar before and just the thought of sitting here with him made her skin crawl in a weird way. He nodded sharply "Agreed!"
Max watched the exchange between his friend and his supposed maid. He couldn't believe his ears. Was this man his friend or someone else? What exactly happened?
Hera helped him get back on his feet. They were about to exit the bar when someone pulled Hera by her waist.
She yelped at the sudden invasion and fell down to the bar stool next to him.
"You are one hot chick!" His breathy, alcohol induced voice whispered to her while his friend cheered him on.
Max was about to go after the guy but Bryce beat him to it.
With one hand, he pulled up Hera to
his side. He grabbed the so called bastard by the collar and pushed him to the wall. He gave him a punch that bloodied his hands and threw him over the counter making him smash the table and hitting himself on the wall.
Hera stepped in to intervene but the next word that left his mouth had her in a bind.
"Don't you ever come close to my woman ever again!" He threatened while she watched him In awe, her ears not believing what she had just heard.
