The Curse Of Eden

Chapter 27- Halloween Nurses

"Do you have an arrest warrant?" Jessica Elman challenged in her baby blue scrub, and the patient profile she had in her hand.

Adam and Ken shared glances but made sure to not let their expression give out anything.

"You're a murder suspect, we don't need a warrant." Adam replied as he held her arms behind her back.

Jessica was quick to snap her arms and take a step aside, surprising Adam with the quick action.

"I'm not an idiot detective." Jessica snapped. "Unless you have anything against me and have been granted a warrant, please don't come bother me in my workplace. Jessica turned around arrogantly but her behavior was not working out for Adam.

He didn't give a damn about what she spat out if her mouth, how smart she thinks she is, or about the damn arrest warrant. Jessica was his solid lead to get Collette back safely. With angry strides, and being prepared this time, he snatched Jessica's arm, twisting it to her back before taking the other to join its sister behind her, easily cuffing them together. "Hey!" Jessica's scream resonated throughout the hospital, mixed with the clammering of papers that fell from her arm.

"Jessica Elman you're under arrest for the murder of Blake Jilles. Anything you say with that smart mouth of yours, believe me, will be taken against you. And I don't tolerate a know it all."

He pulled her towards the car, despite her constant protests and screams the whole way, up until they reached HQ.

Adam placed a hand on his head from the headache the nurse gave him.

"Some adult she was." Ken sighed in sarcasm at Jessica's childish behavior, screams and whining.

"Let's just keep her waiting in the black room for now. I'll need to take to the captain. Get Elliot to my office. I'll need something to bargain off with against Jessy here."

The two started making their way towards Adam's office.

"Don't you have the least bit suspicion that E might be diverting our attention away but this? And maybe the nurse really is innocent?"

Adam sighed. "It's still worth the shot. You heard what Milles said about the mix up in medications. No one would know what to add and how unless he was a professional and had direct access to Mrs. Jilles' medication. "Hey, check this out."

Adam and Ken simultaneously turned towards Elliot as he entered Adam's office.

"Mrs. Jilles was assigned a nurse to come visit her for a daily medical checkup. She would come in every day to give her the shots she needed. Apparently, since Mrs. Jilles used to work for the hospital, the nurse was assigned free of charge." "So they were doing her a favor." Ken stated note than asked.

"Yeah, but why would that nurse want to kill her?" Adam asked with crossed arms.

"I don't think it was personal. I think that nurse was assigned. Jessica Elman, thirty years old, been working at the same local hospital with Mrs. Jilles for five years now. Was an intern trained by Mrs. Jilles until she was finally able to fly on her own." Elliot reported from his tablet.

"Figures why she'd now be nursing her mentor." Adam commented.

"But then again, why kill her? Was Blake Jilles a bully or something?" Ken asked with a scrunched face.

"She didn't look like the part." Adam turned to his partner. "A little out of her head but not a bad person. She just gave me the creeps and that's all." Adam invisibly shivered. "Let's go have a chat."

Alex, Avery, Ruby, and Kristen were already waiting in the control room, watching Jessica.

"Anything peculiar?" Adam asked once he made an appearance.

"She seems very confident." Ruby replied. "No fidgeting, no sweating, no furrowed eyebrows, or lip biting. She's as calm as an empty hammock. Look at her posture." Ruby directed as all eyes turned to the nurse in place. "She's slumped down in her seat like she's watching TV. Her hand is supporting her head from the side and she didn't tap a finger or a leg once. She's rather bored."

"Maybe she's just good at hiding her emotions." Ken shrugged.

"Anxiety and worry are contagious detectives. You'd feel it straight away just by looking in her eyes. Besides, I'm rather good at what I do. I can know a fake demeanor if I see one."

"Then she's either very brave or she really is innocent." Adam commented as he left the control room, Ken following.

"Okay, let's just cut to the chase shall we?" Adam sat in front of Jessica in a cold expression while she kept a plain one. Ken chose to remain on his feet by the wall, apparently his favorite position to appear intimidating behind his partner. "Who hired you?"

Jessica scoffed with an eye roll. "You think you know everything."

"Oh please, do enlighten me." Adam offered a tight-lipped smile.

"I'm not saying anything without a lawyer."

"No." Adam replied plainly.

"What do you mean no? I have the right to get a lawyer." Jessica protested.

"Nope." Adam even had the courtesy to pop the 'p'. He slacked back into his chair comfortably.

"I can sue you for this you know. You arrested me without a warrant and are forbidding me a lawyer."

Adam got closer to the table, bending his body at it as he stared Jessica down.

"I'd love it if you did that, yeah. I've been thinking about a major career shift lately."

"You can't do that!"

"Watch me." Adam got up from his place and started making his way towards the door.

"Oh, right." He turned towards the nurse. "Since no one knows that you're here, it looks like you'll be our guest for quite the time. You won't be leaving unless I get what I want. Happy boarding in our humble station Mis Jessica Elman." Adam and Ken left the room in a dramatic exit, walking straight to the control room.

"Oh, you definitely did a mark on her." Alex commented once the two entered.

"Look at her." Ruby directed their attention back to Jessica whose behavior changed drastically.

Her legs were vibrating nonstop in coordination with her fingers that tapped constantly on the table. You can see the trickling of sweat down her forehead and her eyes that are staring off into the distance. A minute later, she up from her seat and walking around the room like a drunk bee.

She walked towards the one-way mirror and banged on it. "Please, you can't leave me here for long. I have to go out or they'll kill me. Please, I need to get out before they know I've been captured."

The team looked at each other in shared glances.

"You want us to go in now?" Ken asked when his gaze met Adam's.

"No, let her be for a while."

"Elliot, did you find anything else on Newman?"

"Erm....we found a farmhouse upstate in his late wife's name but even that was empty. There was no sign of anyone being there." Elliot replied.

"Go deeper Elliot. Find me everything."
