Chapter Chapter Sixteen: In Cold Blood
The place chosen to carry out the kidnapping was the street that gave access to the mansion of the Hicks, which, given the unique characteristics of the area, remained practically desolate most of the day, as well as the rest of the surrounding streets and gave access to the other mansions and luxury residences. Aware of this, the inhabitants of the area tried to pay for protection services or bodyguards, because precisely those streets were suitable for what Duncan and the Benelli brothers were going to do. But they already had a plan in place, and they would do it as quickly as possible, as time was of the essence.
Bernard prepared the car and at the same time as always they set off for the company; that day Norma Hicks would accompany her husband to work and then go with Bernard to buy some things for the imminent birth of the baby. As was their custom, they took the road towards the exit of the residential complex, and like every day, they expected to leave quickly towards the busy streets of New York, but when they were about two hundred meters from the residence a black car was going in front of them he stopped his march suddenly, forcing Bernard to brake as well and prepare to pass him, unaware that another car was approaching them at full speed behind. The impact was so violent that the heavy Bentley crashed into the car in front, the dashboard and steering wheel airbags were activated.
A third car pulled up next to him and Duncan got out with a kind of remote control in his left hand, while with his right he placed a small gray package next to the lock on the rear door of the Bentley that adhered to the metal immediately, he stepped back a little and pressed a button, the explosion caused the door to open a little. The drivers of the other two cars, the Benelli brothers, also got out, pistols in hand, and joined him, and between the three of them they finished opening the door. When the Benelli brothers realized not only Duncan's target was on board but also his wife, they looked at each other for a few seconds.
"Wow!" Giancarlo exclaimed. "We have an extra bonus! We will ask twice for the couple."
They removed Nathan and Norma with great difficulty, because despite how stunned they were by the explosion they were putting up resistance. Seeing the commotion behind him, Bernard struggled to free himself from the airbag on the steering wheel and got out of the car, still slightly dizzy from the impact of the airbag on his face. He got on top of Duncan and tried to grab his gun arm, but he punched him in the face and knocked him over onto his back.
The brothers were trying to get Nathan and Norma into Duncan's car, but Nathan fiercely objected yelling for them to let him go. Seeing that, Duncan decided to launch his own plan and took aim at Nathan, but Bernard had already got up and was on top of him again, holding his arms from behind. Gianluca, who was taking care of Norma, seeing Duncan struggling with Bernard hit her in the face and pushed her into the back seat of the car, then turned to Duncan and Bernard and pulled the trigger, hitting Bernard squarely on the left side of the lower abdomen. When he felt the impact, Bernard felt his legs weaken and he fell to his knees, Duncan was going to finish him off but Nathan, seeing his friend and driver on the ground, pushed Giancarlo hard against the car and he was also on top of him. This time Duncan pulled the trigger against his humanity, hitting him in the chest. Nathan also fell to his knees with his hands on his chest, collapsing in front of Bernard, who also fell backward.
"Noooo..!" Norma yelled when she saw her husband badly wounded on the ground. "Nathan!"
She got out of the car and lunged at him, screaming frantically in horror and despair.
"What did you do?" Giancarlo yelled at Duncan. "Are you crazy? This wasn't the plan!"
"Yours isn't," Duncan said calmly, raising the gun again and pointing it at him, "but mine yes."
And he fired twice, one shot for each brother, surprising them. They both weakly raised their weapons at him but Duncan finished them off with another shot at each. Before falling to the ground next to his brother, Gianluca was able to pull the trigger of his pistol, but the bullet, instead of being directed at Duncan, hit Norma's back, who was crying over her husband, and with a grimace of pain on her face fell on him.
Duncan got in the car and quickly left the scene. His work was already finished. With that scene, the police would have a lot to investigate, and best of all, nothing would point his client as a suspect.
Bernard felt weak, his body did not respond to the order of the brain to get up; he turned slowly to his left and saw the bodies of Nathan and Norma, both wide-eyed, inert over what was beginning to be a pool of blood.
He turned his head and looked at the sky, the blue of it seemed to become much bluer than usual; he realized there were no clouds in space he could see from the ground, and he thought about how curious that situation was. He noticed that everything was getting darker and darker, as if it were rapidly getting dark. And he no longer thought of anything else.
