Chapter Chapter Thirteen: Congratulations, it’s a Boy
Nathan and Norma also talked in bed about what happened that night, but unlike Bernard and Margaret, their concern was greater, since they considered not only their lives were at stake but also of their future son and the life of their driver and his wife for daring to have their child. Nathan couldn't get the idea out of his head that maybe his cousin wants him dead, as hard as it's for him to admit it.
"Do you really think Louis wants you dead?" in her words he could see how incredulous Norma was with respect to the subject.
"It's one of those things you may not see but you can feel. Something like a hunch. In his words and actions it seems he didn't think of something like that, but when you see him in the eye you doubt it and it even intimidates you if you let your guard down. Thank God I'm not intimidated by anyone."
"I really can't believe that, Nathan. I know he has always wanted to take control of the company, although he doesn't express it openly, but from there to wanting to get out of his way in that way is something already exaggerated. You are also cousins, and I know what your idea of family is. I think your convictions should be the same: yours and his. Your parents were very close; I can't understand why you are not."
"Faces we see, hearts we don't know. Something inside him must have died with my uncle, and I really hope it wasn't his good part, the part that values the family and exalts it. The one what honors the memory of his father."
"I still think you have a wrong perception of this whole thing. Maybe the robbery was just that. You are seeing ghosts where there are none."
"Maybe, my darling, maybe. As you say, I may be exaggerating things, but this feeling I have doesn't quite go away, and is what makes me so apprehensive."
"You should relax. You will see all this will pass and you will feel better. You must focus on our child, tomorrow Margaret has her control and we'll finally know what the sex of the baby is."
"Remember that last month we could find out but you didn't want to, it was difficult for me to convince you to let the doctor tell us this time. Won't you regret it tomorrow?"
"No, I'm sure. This time I want to know. I'm also curious."
"Okay. Tomorrow we'll know then. I imagine you want it to be a girl, right?"
She shrugged her shoulders.
"To be honest, I don't care what it is, as long as it's healthy. I have wanted so much to have a child that I don't care about the gender. The most important thing will be to have him or her snuggled here in my arms." "I think the same as you. Although if it's a boy, I will be happier."
"Typical man," she smiled shyly at him, "but then you won't be the only man in my life."
"It doesn't matter to me," he slowly approached her and kissed her on the lips, "I'll always remain the first one, and I won't mind sharing you with him."
Again their lips merged in a soft and warm kiss, then giving way to uncontrollable desire, and finally unleashing all the passion of their bodies in an irrepressible impulse.
The next day, at Dr. Holloway's office, the four of them were staring at the ultrasound monitor as it searched for clues as to the baby's gender.
"Everything looks very good," the doctor said, as he passed the transducer over Margaret's belly. "Let's see around here."
He moved the transducer a little to focus on a specific point.
"Look here," he said, putting the machine down and pressing a button on the ultrasound system. "Do you see this granite? In girls it's the clitoris and in boys the penis. In girls it would be a little smaller."
Nathan and Margaret was waiting, but from the doctor's words, they already imagined everything. Nathan looked into Norma's eyes, and they could both see the glow in them, especially his, already imagining what the doctor was going to say.
"You mean it is a boy?" Bernard asked, putting a hand on Nathan's shoulder.
"Yes," the doctor said, "it is a boy, and a very healthy one."
Nathan suppressed a cry of joy, which could not be helped by Bernard, who after shouting a "yes" of excitement for his employer, he clapped Nathan's shoulder briskly. "Congratulations!" he told him. "Congratulations to both of you!"
Nathan and Norma hugged, visibly excited, for a few seconds. She let a happy tear run down her cheeks.
"I'm very happy for you," Margaret said. "It's a nice feeling to be able to give you this happiness."
"Thanks to both of you," Nathan said, "but thanks especially to you, Margaret, for making our dream comes true and carrying the pregnancy as well as you have done so far." "We are very happy and grateful," said Norma, "and we also thank God for having put you in our path."
"It's a great pleasure for us to help you," Bernard said. "We are also just as happy for your son."
"And we have news for you, too," Margaret said, "about a decision we made last night."
"What is that decision?" Nathan asked, intrigued.
"Who of us will tell them?" Bernard asked his wife.
"You tell them," Margaret replied with a smile.
"Okay," Bernard said, turning to Nathan and Norma. "Margaret and I decided last night that when she is fit, we'll have a child. Our child." "Really?" Nathan asked with a smile. "Will you have a baby?"
"Yes," Margaret said, "we think it's about time. And thanks to you and your support, we'll be able to give him a home and everything he needs." "Count on us for everything you need," Nathan said.
"And I hope one day we can see your son and ours play together in the park," Norma said. "It would be beautiful."
Hearing Norma's words, for a moment Bernard thought it would be strange to see a family like that, with all the money in the world, visiting a park like any other family, and fraternizing with people of a different social class than theirs, as in the case of him, for example, who is a simple driver. He barely smiled, knowing how he already knows Nathan; it wouldn't be strange for him and his family to do that.
"And I don't think you'll need me," Dr. Holloway said. "Everything in Margaret is going very well, if you decide to have your own children there will be no problems and they will be very healthy too."
"Thank you Doctor!" Bernard said. "It's good to hear that."
Everyone left the doctor's office happy. As Holloway had said, everything was going well. Now it was time to wait for the baby to be born.
