Chapter 85
Both men paused, a flicker of surprise crossing their faces.
Madeline emerged from the room with a phone pressed to her ear. "Wait there, I'll be right down."
Her expression darkened upon seeing William.
"Mr. Lewis, with all due respect, what are you doing here? Betraying Tiffany with her best friend wasn't enough? Now you're practically killing her. You and that Brianna really are two of a kind!" She turned to Alex, not wanting to waste any words on William. "Tiffany needs company. I have something urgent to handle."
"Sure, Madam Burton," Alex replied.
Once Madeline left, Alex and William entered the room. The heater hummed, making the room uncomfortably warm.
Vincent had removed his jacket and draped it over a chair. He knelt beside Tiffany with one hand supporting her head as he helped her drink water.
He glanced up at the sound of people coming in. His gaze swept past William without stopping.
William approached Tiffany, his brow furrowed as he took in her pale face. "What happened to her?"
"Brianna locked her in the bathroom and blasted the air conditioning. We couldn't reach her, so we came by, and thank goodness that we did!
"If she had been left in there all night... I can't bear to think about the consequences," Alex explained, his voice tight.
He struggled to comprehend how someone so young could be so cruel.
William's Adam's apple bobbed. "Brianna did this?"
"The police are on their way. They'll get to the bottom of it," Alex replied sternly.
As an outsider, he couldn't mend William's broken heart, but if William sided with Brianna now, it would be a true failure of conscience.
William's phone's ringtone shattered the silence.
He frowned at the caller ID and answered, "Hello."
"William, I'm home. Are you back yet?" Brianna's voice chirped through the speaker.
William paused. "I'm at your dormitory."
"Dormitory?" Brianna's tone shifted to panic. "Why are you there?"
"If I hadn't come, I wouldn't have known you could even try to freeze someone to death," William replied, his voice devoid of emotion but chilling nonetheless.
"William, what... I don't understand..."
"It's fine. The police are here. Explain it to them." William ended the call abruptly.
Brianna tried to call William back, but the police were already on the line.
Half an hour later, the police arrived with Brianna in tow. After taking statements and assessing the situation, they turned to Brianna. "You claim this wasn't intentional?"
"I really didn't mean it," Brianna wept.
"It was just a prank gone wrong.
Then, I ran into my ex-boyfriend
Something happened, and I
evelinet
completely forgot. I swear, I didn't intend to kill her!"
"William, you believe me, right?" Brianna pleaded as she reached for William's sleeve, but he recoiled with visible distaste.
Her eyes darted to Alex, who remained focused on the window.
At last, she turned to Vincent, the central figure in this predicament. Without uttering a word, she fell to her knees before him.
