Chapter 103
Katherine's POV
"Liar!" I yelled out in anger.
I had enough of all this lying and deception from everyone. I will not let him get away with this!
The anger was slowly consuming me, fueling my insides with hate and poisoning my body like a wildfire spiraling out of control.
"Calm down!" An angry warning growl echoed in my mind that was louder than earlier. "You are burning all the energy I had built up for our shift!" Shift?
What was she talking about?
I have never taken my wolf form when I needed to. I am wolfless!
My head suddenly became heavier, like an extra weight had been forced inside my mind.
"What's going on?" I asked, a bit frightened.
I closed my eyes for just a second to calm myself down. Yet, I was greeted by the most beautiful, bright golden eyes I have ever seen. And they were staring back at me.
"Happy birthday, Kate!" The angelic voice said, startling me, and she chuckled amused. "I have waited a long time to say that!"
But before I could say or ask anything, the most excruciating pain rippled through my body, and a painful scream escaped my lips.
The huge wolf let go of me, probably startled at my sudden behavior.
He took a quick step away from me, and I dropped to my hands and knees, whimpering in pain.
My body shook uncontrollably, yet a wave of power settled and surrounded me.
My senses became even more heightened, more intense, and more potent and powerful.
I could now exactly pinpoint where Greyson and twenty of his men stood just a couple of feet away hidden in the forest.
I could hear their hearts beating out of control, as if what they were witnessing was making them afraid.
My attention was drawn to the smell of sweat, which tickled my nose.
I could even pinpoint who the sweat belonged to and physically see it running down Nathan's face in my mind and then dripping on his black shirt.
Was he panicking?
Was the situation making him uncomfortable?
Another scream escaped my lips, making my body twist and turn, feeling my body sprout out of my clothing, and ripping my birthday dress to pieces to make way for my new form.
I could feel every bone breaking and moving in my body.
The pain and burning sensation were excruciatingly painful.
I panted out of breath, trying hard to get my breathing under control.
I didn't expect to have this on my first shift-not like this!
Then it hit me, and reality kicked in.
"I am having my first shift!" I yelled, Thrilled! inside my mind. "I am not wolfless after all!" The excitement started to bubble up inside me. I could not wait to see my wolf's form. I took a deep breath and concentrated. My nose and mouth gave way to a muzzle.
My senses of smell and taste became even more acute.
I took my first whiff with my muzzle, and the intense smell of blood hit my nose. It was so intense that I could basically taste it on my tongue, and I immediately knew it was Xavier's. Did Nathan shoot and kill him?
The thought angered me, and my emotions spiraled out of control, making my blood boil inside my veins.
I wanted to rip him to pieces.
How dare he hold me captive!
How dare he threaten our lives!
How dare he think he would get away with this!
I noticed that my surroundings had become unnervingly quiet around me.
Did everyone leave?
Did they run away?
Did they leave me here alone?
"No!" The voice said and chuckled, "They are just in shock, seeing us shift!"
I internally sighed, relieved; I didn't want to be alone, even in this unsettling situation.
"How long until the process is complete?" I asked through the excruciating pain.
She still didn't introduce herself or even reveal what she looked like. I could only see her eyes when she allowed me to.
"Less than a minute!" She giggled. "The process is almost complete!"
"Why do you sound so pleased with yourself?" I sneered through gritted teeth. "Your timing stinks!"
"Because I have waited for years to be released from my prison!" She said angrily, with a hint of bitterness.
"What?" I gasped, confused, but it ended in an intense moan.
The last bones were settling into position, and they burned like hell.
I panted ever louder, close to tears. I can't take this kind of torture anymore.
"Relax," she said, "it's almost over! I know how strong you are; I have seen it!"
She has seen it.
Was she there when my family tortured and abused me?
Did she see what they had done to me?
Is she the reason I am still alive?
My thoughts race. It is believed that the more a person suffers in their shifts, the more powerful the wolf will be. It is a goddess's test to ensure her gift will be safe and looked after. Only the most powerful wolves go through such a painful shift.
Was this all a test? All the pain and suffering I have endured?
I let out a breath of relief when I noticed that the pain was slowly subsiding and a warm intense burning sensation flowed over my skin.
Gasps sounded around me as fur covered my body.
"F*ck!" Someone swore, and the intensity of the word sent shivers down my spine.
Was I hideous?
Have I shifted wrong?
Did I have more body parts than I should have?
"No!" She said and slowly walked forward, coming from the depths of my mind. "We are beautiful and one of a kind. There is only one of us in existence!"
I gasped out in shock when she revealed herself. I couldn't believe what I was seeing. I had so many questions I wanted to ask her.
"Open your eyes," she ordered, turning her gaze to where Xavier and Nathan used to stand, "our mate needs our help."
My eyes flew open, seeing Nathan still standing with the gun pointed at Xavier. Were they frozen like this the whole time? How long was my shift? It felt like hours! "A few seconds in their time," she said, "and minutes in ours!"
I didn't react to her words. I will ask her later what she meant by it.
Nathan's eyes were wide out of shock seeing me getting to my feet, but soon his shocked expression was replaced with a sinister smile that followed on his lips. "This is just perfect," he said, sounding excited, with his finger on the trigger. "I get to kill the prophecy pair."
